Because I Said So!

When I was a kid I used to HATE it when my parents would tell me no and when I asked why they replied "Because I said so." I hated it! I vowed never to say that to my kids...to always explain to them why I was saying no. But now that I am a parent...I see the value in "Because I said so." While it is nice for kids to try to understand why their parents are saying no, it is also important for us to learn to obey simply for the sake of obedience. We are training our kids to grow up and be Godly men (or in other cases, women). And God rarely explains why we shouldn't do something...although it may be obvious in some cases. We absolutely must know how to obey God simply because He is God and He has said so! Where do we learn how to do this? Is obedience learned in childhood...in those Because I said so's? It is important. Now if I can only figure out how to make my kids more obedient. :)

Oh yeah. My folks did that to us....I resented it. Now I love them for that, but I'm trying to do the same to my children. I want them to heed my wishes, but know that I "say so" only because I love them and want to protect them.

Indeed, it is so difficult to teach little ones why they must obey. I would also add that it is important to teach our children that parents also must obey God, and that we do fail, but he is loving and will forgive, as we should also forgive our children and show mercy to them.
